2012 Doomsday

Learn about the science behind 2012 Doomsday predictions

To understand the world of the Nightkeepers, it helps to understand a bit about the science of the 2012 doomsday predictions. This is a very brief summary I wrote as part of my background research for the series. I am not an expert in this field- it would take a lifetime or more to learn all that there is to know about the various schools of thought surrounding the 12/21/2012 end-date. Any and all errors below are my own, and I will update and correct this information as needed. For more information and a list of citations, please see the References section of this website.

Although there is no consensus regarding exactly what will occur, the evidence supporting the notion that something will happen on December 21, 2012 comes from multiple areas:

The I Ching and the TimeWave hypothesis in fractal mathematics

In 1975, a pair of experts in ethnobotany and fractal waves first reported that the mathematics underlying the scrying ritual of the I Ching have an inherent waveform pattern. If this pattern is matched against a timeline covering modern and ancient history, the highs and lows correspond with cultural highs (e.g. the moon landing) and lows (World War II). If this TimeWave is projected forward into the future, the progression abruptly ceases at a position corresponding to the end of 2012, suggesting that history itself will end on this date.

The WEBBOT program

A far more modern type of scrying device is the WEBBOT program, an amorphous data-gathering program that mines the internet for random phrases every millisecond of every day, analyzes the mined words and uses them to make predictions that are believed to reflect the collective unconscious. While the WEBBOT was originally designed to track and predict stock futures, it has been used to accurately predict more global events, such as the anthrax attacks in 2001, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. According to WEBBOT predictions, a major cataclysm and/or shift in the world order will occur in December of 2012.

The Great Conjunction

The above arguments in support of the 2012 apocalypse fall within the realm of ‘pseudoscience,’ i.e. theories not commonly accepted within the traditional academic sciences. However, not even the most conservative of ivory tower scientists can argue against the astronomical fact that on December 21, 2012, the Earth will complete one cycle of the ‘wobble’ in its rotation, meaning that the planet’s axis will be pointed directly at the Sun. Furthermore, on that day, the Sun will occupy the exact center of the Milky Way. . . directly within the dark rift the Maya believed to be the entrance to the underworld.

This alignment is very rare, last occurring just under 26,000 years ago (corresponding almost exactly to the Maya’s five ages of 5,125 years each), and scientists believe that this conjunction could have devastating consequences. For example, some believe that the magnetic poles of the Earth could reverse, such that north becomes south. Others believe that the Earth’s rotation will slow or even reverse, causing the planet to wobble out of its normal orbit. Any of these consequences could mean the end of life as we know it.

Decreasing magnetism

Notably, the earth’s magnetism has been steadily decreasing over the past several decades, and is now a fraction of what it was only a century ago. According to some researchers, this should be seen as evidence of a coming magnetic reversal.

Sunspots

Additional scientific evidence for cosmic upheaval at the end of 2012 is found in the work of sunspot researchers, who have noted increasingly violent sunspot activity over the past 30 to 50 years. These strong sunspots reportedly show a cyclical and increasing pattern that, if it continues, will come to a head on December 21, 2012. On that day, due to the alignment of the Earth’s axis with the sun, the ionosphere will shift and bulge outward, leaving the planet particularly vulnerable to the giant sunspots predicted for that day. Without the natural protection of the ozone layer (destroyed by ‘mankind turning away from nature’), the Earth could very well experience the ‘fire raining down from the heavens’ predicted by the Maya shaman-priests in the first century A.D.

All of these lines of evidence seem to coincide at the critical date of December 21, 2012, suggesting that something monumental will happen on that date. The more pessimistic readings of the cosmic trends suggest that the zero date could signal the end of the world as we know it.

That is, of course, unless a hero- or a group of heroes- intervenes.
